Class 8 Math HOTS in Profit and Loss

1.     Wheat is cheaper than rice by 20%. By what percent rice costlier than wheat?
      Sol. Let the price of 1 unit rice = Rs 100
Then the price of 1 unit of wheat = Rs (100-20) = Rs80
On Rs 80     excess of price of rice = Rs20
On Rs 100 excess of price of rice = (20/80    x 100) =  25. i.e., 25%
2.     Rice is costlier than wheat by 20%. By what precent is wheat cheaper than rice?
Sol. Let the  price of 1 unit of wheat be Rs100
Then the price of 1 unit of rice = (100+20) = Rs120
On Rs.120, cheapness of wheat = Rs20
On Rs 100 cheapness of wheat = ( 20/120   x 100) =  50/3 % = 16  2/3%
3.     If the cost price of 10 articles is equal to the selling price of 8 articles, find the gain or loss percent?
Sol. Let the CP of each article be Re. 1
Then CP of 8 articles = Rs 8
SP of 8 articles = CP of 10 articles  = Rs 10.
Gain = SP - CP = 10 - 08 = Rs. 2
Gain =   2/8  x 100 = 25%
4.     If the cost price of 5 pens is equal to the SP of 6 pens find gain of loss % ?
Sol. Let the CP of each pen be Rs1
Then CP of 6 pens = Rs. 6.
SP of 6 pens = CP of 5 pens.  =Rs5.
Loss  = CP – SP = 6 – 5 = Re. 1
Loss% = (  1/6  x 100) % = 16  2/3 %
5.     By selling 33 metrs of cloth, one gains SP of 11 metres. Find the gain %.
Sol. Sp of 33 m    CP of 33m  = gain
 SP of 33m  – CP of 33m =  SP of 11m
SP of 33m - SP of 11m = CP of 33m
SP of 22m = CP of 33m
Llet CP of  each meter be Rs1
The CP of 22m = Rs22
SP of 22m = CP of 33m = Rs 33
Gain = SP -  CP Rs (33-22) = Re. 1
Gain% =   11/22  x 100=50%
Problems for Practice.
1)      The SP of 18 books is equal to the CP of 21 books. Find the gain or loss % ?
2)      The CP of 12 fans is equal the SP of 16 fans. Find the gain or loss % ?
